Elections!

This Thursday is both the last officially organized meeting we have this semester, and elections. Yes, the time you, members of DAGGER, get to choose who will lead us into the next year, who will get to design puzzles for Puzzlehunt, and most importantly, who will probably be sending an e-mail every week telling people, "We have DAGGER going on."

Elections should not take particularly long and will be followed by a giant sigh of relief that classes are over as well as games. Once again, send me any requests for particular games.

War Against Fifth Alpha

Hail all,

In our past, our organization fought a horror known only as fifth alpha. Through a night, our organization ran a campaign against fifth alpha. Fifth alpha, or "Fifth Alpha Thingy" was not to be said, and all fun distractions must not contain fifth alpha in alias. This Thursday, all fun distractions will not contain fifth alpha. Things brought will contain Dominion, Dixit, San Juan, and so on.

Gamer's Paradise Charity Tournament

Break is over and I'm going to be incredibly late to this week's meeting. Hopefully David will be able to bring the games to the meeting relatively on time in my stead, but I'm sure games will reach the room somehow.

In much cooler news, Gamer's Paradise Charity Tournament will be going on the weekend of March 30-31, 12:00-6:30 PM!
We are hosting five awesome tournaments:

Starcraft 2: HotS
DotA 2
Settlers of Catan
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Magic: The Gathering

All tournaments will have a $5 entry fee and have marginally attractive prizes TBA. All of your delicious money will be funneled through us and directly to Child's Play.

Starcraft 2 will be 1v1, best of 3, single elimination.

DotA 2 will be solo mid, double elimination, best of 3, unless we get enough interest to prove that we will have more than 3 or 4 teams.

Settlers of Catan will be run akin to these rules. They are subject to modification depending on the amount of participants.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be run by someone who knows more about the subject than me.

Magic: The Gathering will be a Gatecrash draft. Due to this, the entry fee for this tournament will be $15 as you are also paying for your packs.

Once the tournament days near we will have much more information, but if you are interested, feel free to send an e-mail to dukegamersparadise@gmail.com.

Not Quite Spring Break Break

If your past few weeks have been anything like mine, you can't wait for spring break to finally arrive. So, we are taking a break from any theme this week. However, since there will be an entire week of not school to plan things, I want to know what you guys want to see DAGGER do in the near future. I'm currently thinking of more Murder in the Dark and something similar to Nerf Wars soon.

In the vein of things DAGGER is hosting, I want to remind everyone that we are hosting a series of charity tournaments March 30-31. We already asked about any particular choices for a board game tournament, but there are still two events up for debate.

What we know we are going to have in some way shape or form:
Magic: The Gathering Draft
Starcraft II
Settlers of Catan

What we have to decide between and you can send long emails about why one is better:
DotA 2 or League of Legends
Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Melee

All of these tournaments will have small entry fees and small prizes (though I can't quite speak for the draft, MTG is an expensive hobby). All profit is going to go straight to Child's Play Charity though.

Regardless, I hope everyone has an awesome, not full of class, spring break.

Card Games on DAGGERcycles

I might've missed last week's theme e-mail, but not this week! This week we are going to play card games of all sorts. Really if most of the game is based around cards it would be a card game. Again, suggestions are welcome.

In additional other news, Helio and John have a surplus of Gatecrash booster packs and are looking for people to run a draft with all the packs. "We're thinking $2.50 per pack, so that would come out to $7.50 per person no prize support (or like $10 per person with 8 packs payout per 8 person pod)." Contact me, contact them, go to DAGGER, all are great options for joining in on this draft.

Anyways, hope to see you guys there!

P.S. We don't actually have DAGGERcycles; although if anyone wanted to donate one, we probably wouldn't turn them down.

Valentines Day!

It's the season of love and pointlessly expensive flowers! Many couples will participate in histrionic dates and EVERYTHING WILL BE BLINDINGLY PINK! Other people will basically ignore the existence of the holiday, and a few people will eat flavored chalk shaped like hearts. Valentines Day is arriving!

So basically we're just gonna have a regular DAGGER meeting with games and stuff.

DAGGER Community

Thursday is coming soon, and since we're in mid-October, we may as well have a pre-emptive Halloween theme. It's super happy fun time scaring ourselves into unity through combined pants-wetting terror. Ghosts, betrayal, and other horror games will be making an appearance.

I hope to see you guys this Oct. 19th!

P.S. Durham County library is planning on running board game nights and a Graphic Novel Club. Maybe contact me or check it out if you are interested?

OH GOD IT'S DAGGER TIME AGAIN

QUICK! EVERYONE PANIC AND TYPE IN ALL CAPS!
FLIP THE TIMER! GRAB THE PIECES! ROLL THE DIE! MATCH THE TILES! VENT THE FRIGGLESWITCH!

WE'RE BRINGING EVERY INSANE TIMED GAME WE HAVE TO DAGGER AND YOU CAN PANIC TOO!

On a less insane note, I'd like to thank David Hemminger, our Riddlemaster, for keeping DAGGER running in my absence.

Hope to see you guys there.

FINALS

As we are all being crushed under the might of finals and final papers and final projects, there is one more final we have yet to challenge. FINAL BATTLES! This week, we finally have a theme of all the final battles. The fate of everything rests in your hands! Which basically means any game with a fight given how many have you in a life or death situation.

We will be bringing Betrayal for fighting the supernatural, Flash Duels for fighting each other, Pandemic (and the expansion which actually contains the game) for fighting off the plague(s) of doom. You get the idea. Anyways, as always you can request any game.

Wild Wild West

Not quite the movie, but this Thursday we bring a very special mix of themes exemplified by gigantic mechanical spiders and flying saw blades of doom.

This Thursday, it is time for the Wild West and SCIENCE! Because as everyone knows, the final frontier is just like the the American frontier: cruel, unforgiving, full of undiscovered riches, and made of a vacuum that pulls you inside out if you stay too long. So we will be bringing Space Alert, Race for the Galaxy, Pandemic, BANG!, and other scientifically provably similarly themed games.

As always, feel free to request any game.

FREEDOM DAGGER

Elections! America! Freedom!

America is the land of the free, and no one board game should be restricted to the cobwebby stores of our closets. Any game is free to be brought and be played without discrimination.

This is a free games night, everything is game!

As always, feel free to request specific games.

Nerf Wars and Surprise AC3

Nerf Wars, Soc Psych 129. Same place we had Murder in the Dark. Only this time we'll have two teams of people with nerf guns in an elimination match. Bring your own nerf guns, or borrow some, we have quite a few.

Copy Pasta ftw.

SURPRISE ASSASSIN'S CREED 3

is also happening in the regular DAGGER room.

Magic and Puzzlehunt

Big news on the Puzzlehunt front! It exists!
This year, you too can participate in catching Pikachu solving puzzles and collecting all the gym badges clues on November 17th for this year's Pokemon themed Puzzlehunt. Registration is now open! Just click on this giant block of blue linky goodness to register you or your team!

Also, this week will be magic week. In the spirit of sorcery and spells, we will supply a stock of all our most magical games like Thunderstone and Seasons. Also, also, bring Magic: The Gathering cards. I'm sure there are more than a few of you who have been wanting to duel for awhile.

New Board Games

We got new games! Three of them to be exact, and here they are:

Smash Up - Fast, and fun. Pick two types of decks, smash them up, and then fight each other for different bases. Expect zombie dinosaurs, robot wizards, alien tricksters, etc.

Seasons - A short card game draft followed by generating a massive hoard of crystals while destroying everyone else's crystals.

Khronos - Time Civilization. Really. It's a bit hard to understand the first time through, but fans of strategy games should love this.

also Thurn and Taxis in a we-don't-own-it-but-we-just-got-it way

Hope everyone had a great Fall Break and is ready for more DAGGER!

Assassin's Creed III

For this week's DAGGER, we will be having a very special guest with a very special presentation. By that I mean the Ubisoft representative for Duke is bringing Assassin's Creed III for people to go ahead and try. There will be 2 or 3 copies running, and we will be bringing some other games (Remember, you can request any games we own). Oh, and pizza. Since this post looks small, but I feel this is big news:

COME TRY OUT ASSASSIN'S CREED III, ALSO FOOD

Edit: I guess I lied. So this was a promotional event for Assassin's Creed 3, but the actual game will not arrive until later. Remi will most likely give me details for the event with AC3 later. On the other hand, there was pizza. Only a half lie.

One Shot RPGs and Music Trivia!

Man this is a late post. For anyone who hasn't seen the e-mail, we are doing One Shot RPGs tomorrow night! Among our fine selection is:

Dread:
Zombehs! Everywhere! It's up to you to... I guess not die? This is a pretty unique take on tabletop RPGs for one reason. We don't use dice, we use a Jenga tower. Need to do something difficult? Pull a Jenga block. Need to do something REALLY hard? Pull MULTIPLE blocks. When the tower falls, you are DEAD! Then we build the tower up again and keep going. Maybe you'll survive.

Fiasco:
You like Cohen Brothers films? Do you like watching every character's lives go to hell slowly in a self-destructive spiral? DO YOU LIKE FUNNY ACCENTS!? Then Fiasco is the game for you! Simply choose a theme, roll a bunch of dice, and start acting out a movie, one scene at a time. Watch as your well-laid plans explode magnificently and then weep!

Gamma World:
Imagine D&D 4e. Now imagine it simpler. Now imagine it where you random your character. NOW! Imagine it in the future-pocalypse. That's basically Gamma World. You will die, and you will die often. Then you will roll a random character and keep going.

Old School Hack: (maybe)
Tabletop RPG condensed. No frills, just you out there doing stuff, killing stuff, stuffing stuff, stuff. Hey, it's simple and free.

Also! No Doubt Listening Event with Trivia!

We are co-sponsoring an event Friday night at 6 PM at GA Down Under. There will be music, but also, there will be 80s and 90s trivia with free food, and prizes!

Thorsday, THORSDAY, THORSDAY!!

Come see ALL THE FANTASY THEMED GAMES EVER!!! Or as many as we find and bring. Last week was pretty interesting, since I never realized how many Magic players we have that came out of the woodworks. It was fun playing with everyone, and especially fun going back in time to kill Hitler. Everyone should try out Chrononauts if you haven't already.

Anyways, onto business. Next week we will either be holding a one-shot RPG night or Nerf Wars.

One-Shot RPG Night:

We can run a short module of well-established table-tops like D&D (we have access to 4e, if you want 3.5e you can volunteer to DM or send us the rulebooks) or Pathfinder, maybe GURPS. We also have games more heavy on storytelling like Fiasco... and Fiasco... We also have Gamma World, which is D&D 4e only your character will die and you will randomly generate them all.

Nerf Wars!

We get a room in Soc. Psych. Then we take over the whole building like in Murder in the Dark and shoot Nerf guns at each other in CTF or DM style games. We have tons of Nerf guns, but feel free to bring your own if this happens.

That's about it, hope to see you all soon!

Vidya Games! & things

The Murder in the Dark turnout was far greater than I had expected. It was fun playing with everyone, and learning who the ninjas were! That 7 person kill story will be told for years: at least the three more I have.

Anyways, this Thursday we will be having fun staring at shiny screens and pushing buttons, or clicking mice. The Wii and Xbox 360 will be appearifying at the meeting, and I believe Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the most requested item. Any other not-video game items can be brought at request!

In other, other news, I've been itching to do a Nerf event, and I wonder what people, or the people who check this blog, would think about it.

Hope to see everyone soon!

Murder in the Dark

Hey everybody!

Last week's DAGGER was pretty fun, it was nice seeing many new faces; plenty of them arguing over sheep, or spies, or something.

This week, we are going to be holding Murder in the Dark in Soc. Psych. starting at 9 PM The whole building. For anyone who doesn't know, here's something almost exactly like what we'll be playing. http://www.ehow.com/how_2085733_play-murder-dark.html

There are some variations which make it more Mafia-like in gameplay, but I assure you it will be awesome. For anyone who thinks otherwise we still have the regular room reserved from 8-11:59 PM.

See you soon!
