Thank you to everyone who joined us at Gamers' Paradise. I do still plan on writing a longer post specifically on that. We hope you'll join us again next year for Gamers' Paradise 2011.

On November 4th, we played some great tile games, including Bananagrams, Take it Easy, Settlers of Catan, DAGGER's brand new copy of Betrayal, and Carcassonne.

This past week, on November 11th, we pulled out some games that hadn't made their way to DAGGER yet and introduced them to all of you.

This Thursday, DAGGER will not be meeting. Instead, join us for Puzzlehunt on Saturday!

"Cards are war, in disguise of a sport" -Charles Lamb

I hope everyone enjoyed classic card games night! Whether you played Spades, Hearts, Sequence, War, or anything else, we're glad you decided to make DAGGER a part of your Thursday night.

September 30th: Classic Card Games

DAGGER is putting on its poker face this week in preparation for Classic Card Games Night on Thursday. We'll be playing any game that uses a traditional deck of playing cards. As usual, we'll be in Soc Sci 105 starting at 8:30, and we'll be there through around midnight, so come join us! We'll have several decks of cards, but you're welcome to bring your own as well. We'll also have at least one board game that uses a couple sets of classic cards. Bring your Queens, bring your Jacks, and bring your Kings and play some card games with us!

Video Games Recap

I hope everyone enjoyed the video games we had for you last week. Homework kept me away for most of the night, but I did stop by to see people banging away on some Rock Band drums, beating up each other's characters in various ways, building up plant defenses against zombies, and playing Mahjong.

Activities Fair

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the DAGGER email list at the activities fair this afternoon. If you have made your way to the DAGGER blog from a flyer you got at the Smash Tournament or the activities fair, WELCOME! I hope to see you at future DAGGER meetings.

Congratulations, Michael!

Thank you to everyone who came to the Smash Tournament last night! I hope you all had fun. For those of you who weren't there, here's a recap:

With 24 people participating in the tournament, we ran one-on-one matches, best 2 out of 3, on the 4 TVs in the room until we reached the final 3 contestants. At this point, we moved to a round-robin finals round on the big projector screen. Congratulations to Liang on getting third place, Will on his second place finish, and especially Michael, the winner of the tournament. I hope you enjoy your prizes!

Meanwhile, in the same room, games of Betrayal, Bang!, and Bananagrams gave those not playing Brawl something fun to do. After the tournament, these games and some "just for fun" games of Brawl finished off the evening.

DAGGER Game Library

In the right sidebar, you can now find a link to information about the DAGGER game library. This new page contains information and links about all of the games owned by DAGGER.

A group of DAGGER members, including two of our officers, recently went to the BPA World Boardgaming Championships in Lancaster, PA. While there, they purchased Settlers of Catan, Cranium, Bohnanza, and Shadows Over Camelot; this means that DAGGER is now the proud owner of 73 board and card games!

April 27th: Return of the New Games

For our final meeting of the semester, this week we played more of the new games in the DAGGER collection. After elections were finished, we played foxes and bears in Tally Ho!, built trains in Express, built civilizations in Roll Through the Ages, and fenced some more in En Garde. There were also nymphs in Bacchus, confusion in The Club, and foreign currency in Money.

That's it for DAGGER until August, but we hope to see you then! Good luck to everyone on finals and have a great summer!

New Games Night - April 20

Last night at DAGGER, we pulled out the new games, unwrapped boxes and cards, punched out pieces, read through unfamiliar rules, and celebrated the recent expansion of the DAGGER library.

We collected evidence in Looting London, mined in Incan Gold, and fenced in En Garde. We collected bugs for points in Swat, matched birds in Birds on a Wire, and built lines of matching color in Take it Easy*. We also played Roll Through the Ages, Oregon, 2 de Mayo, and Master's Gallery.

There may have been more that I missed. It was that eventful of a night, with a whole bunch of great new games.

*This song will now be stuck in my head forever.

The Rest of the Semester

Only two Tuesdays left in the semester, and you know what that means. DAGGER is wrapping up for the 2009-2010 school year.

Join us this Tuesday, April 20, to help us play all of our newly acquired games from Funagain Games and FRED Distribution! (Read more here). We'll also have some newer games that have yet to make it to DAGGER. We'll be in Soc Sci 105 at 8:30PM.

Next Tuesday will be our last meeting of the semester, and we will be holding elections. If you want to run for any position now is the time to start thinking about it. Later this week we will send out a description of all the positions to give you a better sense of what each of us is responsible for. In the mean time if you have questions about positions feel free to email any of the officers:

President: Tina Del Carpio (tina.delcarpio)
Treasurer: Chris Kizer (chris.kizer)
Librarian: Lisa Gutermuth (lisa.gutermuth)
Publicist: Megan Heysham (megan.heysham)
(All email addresses are @duke.edu)

Hope to see you tomorrow night, and good luck with all your projects/papers/tests!

DAGGER Growth

At the end of the 2008-2009 school year, the DAGGER library consisted of 6 games. Many of the games found at weekly meetings were personal property of DAGGER members. Recently, this has changed drastically. After 3 separate donations to DAGGER, our library now stands strong at over 60 games.

This Thursday, DAGGER received two boxes, weighing a total of 68 pounds, and containing approximately 30 new games.

While not all of the games in this picture belong to DAGGER (some are property of our librarian) a nearly 1000% increase in DAGGER-owned games is something we are greatly appreciating! (Please note that not all games are visible, as there are 3 layers.)

P.S. We have learned that the games are from Funagain Games and FRED Distribution. We applied for a grant earlier this semester and they decided to give us even more than we had applied for in the form of a starter library. We would like to thank them for their amazing contribution.

Fear Not, We Will Return

Your DAGGER officers would like to apologize for the recent lack of activity. Tests, projects, and sickness have unfortunately kept us from holding meetings for the past couple weeks. We hope to return to our regularly scheduled meeting time this week. We would also like to remind you that if you have any ideas for a theme you would like to see at DAGGER, you can either comment here or send an email to our president, Tina, at christina.delcarpio@duke.edu.

Video Games Night - March 2

This week, DAGGER was consumed with the bright lights and exciting sounds of video games! Rock Band, Beetles Rock Band, Brawl, and a few other games surrounded our favorite Soc Sci building on its various TVs and the projection screen.

General Card Games - February 16

Two of the DAGGER officers were out of commission with a project, but your remaining officers were pleased to bring you our first general card games night of 2010. Bang!, Fluxx, Magic, and Tichu were just a few of the options for the night.

I've heard there was a game of hearts using the Tichu deck, also.

General Board Games - February 9

After a brief hiatus following winter break, DAGGER made its return in February with a general board games night. Highlights of the night included an intense game of Settlers of Catan and a close-scoring round of Carcassonne.

Nerf War and Guns - December 5

Before exams started up and we all headed off for winter break, DAGGER had its last meeting of the semester. To end the semester with a Bang! the DAGGER officers decided to hold a Nerf War and Guns night. So we gathered our Nerf guns and headed over to Soc Psych for a Nerf War and various gun-related games.

If you've never done Nerf War, here's a quick summary of how it works. We split into two teams, which went to opposite ends of the building to plan strategy. When both teams were ready, we scattered throughout the building and fought each other to the (Nerf) death.

Puzzle Hunt - November 21

Thanks to everyone who participated in Puzzlehunt back in November! We hope you had fun running around campus solving puzzles and figuring out the mystery of the missing bus driver. We certainly enjoyed ourselves watching you and answering your calls for help!

From coffee stains to fliers, our puzzle-writing team worked hard to create puzzles for you. We hope you enjoyed them!

You can view more pictures here!
